The Scion FR-S has been on every car-enthusiasts mind for quite a while now. Today we find a video that will certainly help pass the time before the release. A Toyota GT86 (known to us as the Scion FR-S) Testing with full Toyota Racing Development (TRD) trim.

In this video you can spot a few upgrades to the stock GT86. TRD brakes, rims and a great sounding exhaust tone. Other TRD parts like front spoiler and upgraded headlights round out the TRD look.

The Subaru BRZ went on sale in Japan on February 3 and was expected by the company to sell around 450 units a month. Now, almost two months later, Subaru’s parent company Fuji heavy industries has released that 3,551 BRZ’s have sold, eclipsing estimates.

This goes above and beyond what the company was expecting out of the rear-wheel drive sports car’s sales. These numbers are impressive, but it is not uncommon for a huge sales spike to happen when a car first hits the market, especially in Japan. It will be interesting to see if American buyers jump on the BRZ as hastily as the Japanese have, with the company forecasting 500 units a month to be sold in the States.

The BRZ is getting to its intended audience as well, with over 60 percent of BRZ buyers in Japan under 40 years old. Two thirds of all Japanese BRZ owners opted for the manual transmission as well, which signals this as a hit with driving enthusiast.

The BRZ goes on sale in the United States on April 20, 2012.

Subaru teased the world with the BRZ STI concept at the LA Auto Show last year, and it now appears as though the automaker will live up to expectations, delivering a high-performance version of its new sports car.

In a recent interview, Subaru global marketing boss Atoshi Atake admitted as much, commenting that the company has been inundated with requests for a more powerful model. “Let me say this – we will certainly satisfy our customers,” said Atanke frankly. “We are already working on a faster version.”

As a concept, the BRZ STI was outfitted with a custom aero package, larger 18-inch wheels, high-performance tires, a massive rear spoiler and even a carbon fiber roof to further reduce the car’s already low center of gravity. The show car, however, continued to use the direct-injection 2.0-liter boxer 4-cyldiner with 197 hp.

While past brand history would indicate an STI version would use a turbo, that’s not the case here, with Atake saying that basic modifications to the intake and exhaust, as well as a higher rev limit could up power. In fact, Atake swore off a BRZ Turbo commenting that, “we want to keep turbocharging separate. It is for models like the WRX STI.”

In addition, Atake hinted that the BRZ could get a roadster variant, a real likelihood considering GT 86 lead engineer Tetsuya Tada has already said a GT 86 convertible is on the way.

Bringing another crossover vehicle into its family, Subaru announced today that it will debut the 2013 XV Crosstrek at the upcoming New York Auto Show.

With a 2.0-liter, 148-hp Boxer engine, though not the same as the company’s hotly anticipated BRZ coupe, and the underpinnings of an Impreza, the XV Crosstrek is set to arrive in the U.S. market this fall — just in time for soccer moms to make a trade in and attend their kid’s games in something new.

Despite running on the Impreza platform, the XV Crosstrek is built on a significantly modified chassis that the company says increases the car’s capability, presumably in Suby-suited conditions like winter driving.

As is common practice for the company, the car comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel drive and is paired with either a five-speed manual or optional CVT automatic. Manual drivers will probably appreciate that Subaru is also including hill start assistance with its manual trasmission models so the car won’t back-roll while sitting on an incline.

As we’ve previously reported, the company announced plans to run its WRX and more potent WRX STi on a different platform for the 2013 model year, allowing further separation between the family oriented Impreza and sport-spirited rally racers. While that’s good news for people interested in buying a new WRX, it also means people shouldn’t expect any of that testosterone in the altered Impreza platform which the XV Crosstrek is built on.

Still, it comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels which bridge the 8.7-inch ground clearance gap between the underbody and road, which is more than most crossovers and some SUVs.

Finally, the car comes in two trim lines: premium and limited. The latter offers a host of more luxurious features including an improved infotainment system. Other features in the premium package include power windows and door locks, which suggests that these features might not be standard on the entry-level model. That seems strange given how common those features are in today’s market.

Pricing has yet to be announced on the XV Crosstrek, but we’ll be reporting live from the New York Auto Show to bring you the latest coverage.

Excited for the new Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S? We already know how the FR-S performs – read our review here - but up until now, we hadn’t a real clue what its fuel economy would be like.

Official EPA fuel efficiency figures have been posted on fueleconomy.gov, and it appears the 2.0L four-cylinder powered BRZ and FR-S will get 22-mpg city, 30-mpg highway.

Those are the figures for the manual-equipped models, while the automatics should get around 25-mpg city, 34-mpg highway.

Those in the market for the all-new Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S (Toyota GT 86) will be excited to hear that Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., has announced the production of the new jointly-produced sports car will hit 100,000 a year.

At least that’s their goal. The BRZ/FR-S/GT 86 are all produced at the Subaru Gunma Factory in Japan and it looks like the announcement comes hot on the heels of initial order figures. Toyota has already seen 7,000 orders for the GT 86 while the BRZ has garnered the attention of 2,500 enthusiasts. While those numbers are clearly skewed since it’s a brand new car on the market, it’s still far more than what the Japanese automakers planned on selling each month.

Last week we heard that Subaru only has plans to bring 6,000 BRZs to America. Whether or not that will change remains to be seen, but we have a feeling that more customers will opt for the Scion FR-S than the Subaru BRZ in America.

Scion-FR-S-Measuring-Session-front-three-quarter-1.jpg

North American tuner companies were invited to Toyota Headquarters in Torrance, California to measure the new Scion FR-S and take a closer look at the car to begin the process of drafting future tuning parts. Many tuners were present at the event and the response to Scion’s new sports car has been overwhelmingly positive across the board.

Present at the session include the tuning industry’s heavy-hitters AEM, DC Sports, Whiteline, and ACT. Wheel companies Velox and König and audio specialists Scosche were present as well. According to Motor Trend, whom were present at the measuring session, many more companies were still scheduled to take measurements after they departed.

A number of Scion FR-S models were provided by Toyota for the tuner’s disposal. Audio specialists dismantled the interiors to measure clearance for stereo systems. Taking it even farther, performance intake systems tuner Airaid went ahead and digitally mapped the engine bay with a 3D scanner. According to Airaid engineer Clayton Rietz, the intake system in the FR-S is similar to the set-up in the Toyota Tacoma, which Airaid has already made an intake system for. Assuming that an FR-S intake will be a straightforward tweak from the Tacoma, performance parts for the FR-S may make it to the market quickly after the cars official on sale date.

What’s more, a close look during the session revealed just how much of the hardware belongs to Toyota’s project partner, Subaru. Suspension, exhaust and brake components are all stamped with the Subaru emblem. Performance suspension specialists Whiteline noted that many parts appear shared with existing Subaru cars, making an aftermarket suspension system only a test fit away.

In terms of wheel fitment, the Hellaflush community will be delighted to know that the inner lips of the front fenders are already smoothened and fender rolling will not be a necessary task when performing an ultra-flush wheel fitment. Both front and rear brake calipers are very compact, effectively eliminating clearance issues. Several wheel experts also suggested the possibility of fitting 10-inch wide wheels in the rear without the need for modification.

With a car so tuner friendly, the new FR-S is not only well positioned to become an instant hit, but should bring forth a resurgence to aftermarket tuning as well.

Earlier, we had reason to celebrate as production for the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 had finally kicked off in Japan. The highly anticipated sports coupe will make its way to America as the Scion FR-S to hot anticipation.

But just in case we’ve all forgotten how great the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S is, the Japanese automaker released a series of videos featuring Toyota design chief “Dezi” Nagaya at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show talking about the GT86′s design story. The four part series is accompanied with a video featuring Tetsuya Tada, Toyota chief engineer who is the main man behind the acclaimed GT86.

The videos offer insight to the inspirational design of the GT86, including how it pays tribute to the classic Toyota 2000GT. Nagaya also talks about the exterior and interior design, and even goes so far as to tell how the “86″ logo came to usher in the new-generation sports car.

Subaru announced its new, low-cost suite of safety systems called “EyeSight” today that the company says will be one of the most affordable instances of this technology on the U.S. market.

By using two charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras mounted inside the car on the upper edge of the windshield, the company is able to offer a hybrid of safety featured including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and vehicle lane departure warning. The feature is scheduled to debut as an option in the 2013 Outback and Forrester at the upcoming New York International Auto Show.

Keeping the cameras inside the car, Subaru says, will also prevent them from being damaged where other, bumper-mounted, systems might suffer.

At speeds below 19 mph, the system will be able to detect pedestrians and avoid impending collisions and is even able to stop the car completely under certain circumstances. When above that speed, EyeSight can apply the brakes if driver intervention isn’t detected.

Aside from applying the brakes, the system can also cut the throttle to slow down. EyeSight can also detect when the driver mistakenly shifts into drive instead of reverse while in a parking space.

The system can also be shut off, if so desired, to avoid notifications during off-road or rough road travel.

Pricing details weren’t released, but expect it to cost less than $2,100 which is how much Volvo’s comparable “technology package” runs for.

01-forester.jpg

Subaru is issuing a recall for 275,000 Foresters today, built between November 26, 2007 and March 13,2012.

NHTSA cites a fault in the automatic locking retractor in the rear center seat belt assembly as the source of the issue. This specific seat belt connector is used for restraining child seats, and because of the faulty locking mechanism, child seats can become unsecure while the vehicle is in motion, greatly increasing the injury risk for the child in the seat.

Subaru will contact all owners affected and replace the faulty seat belt component free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before April 13, 2012. Concerned customers can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783, or the NHTSA safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

The full owners manual for the new Subaru BRZ hit the web today courtesy of self proclaimed “performance dealership”, Subaru of Keene in New Hampshire.

The latest development in the upcoming new Subaru release is that the BRZ will be coming to America in limited quantities. Using this as its angle Subaru of Keene posted the full owners manual for the car online, as well as adding in some large “order me now” buttons for potential buyers. The dealership also wants its customers to know that, “Just finding one of these cars (BRZ) could be a full-time job. Subaru of Keene is a performance dealer and will give priority to customers who pre-order.” The supposed limited quantity of BRZs is helping the company gain some momentum in sales by taking lots of pre-orders based on fear that the car won’t be easy to find once it arrives.

The owners manual itself is nothing out of the ordinary, filled with the customary instructions on how to start the car, use the infotainment system and complete other tasks in the car.

It does have one interesting section which informs drivers, “In the following conditions, the engine speed may become high while driving. This is due to automatic up-shifting control or down-shifting implementation to meet driving conditions. It does not indicate sudden acceleration.” Toyota may be a little bitter still about the unintended accleration lawsuits they have been going through, and want to make sure that there is no mistaking the cars performance oriented transmission for unintended acceleration.

The dealerships web page, which features the owners manual also carries a link to ft86club.com, where a full list of BRZ accessories is available with pricing. The options are what you would expect for this type of sports car, spoiler options, chrome fender and door trim, rear bumper applique and underskirt and infotainment options. For the full list with pricing, check out the gallery below.

The BRZ will be coming to a dealership near you soon, but according to Subaru of Keene, “If you wait for pricing, there is little chance of getting a BRZ in 2012.”

2012-Subaru-WRX-09

Subaru replaced Honda as the top-rated automaker by Consumer Reports today, in a bit of an upset.

Not only did the Japanese automaker known best for its efficient all-wheel drives take the top spot, but did so while the previous champion fell by several points over last year’s ratings.

The victory, then, is due not only to an improved Subaru line, but also to declining quality on Honda’s part. According to Consumer Reports, Subaru’s overall standing improved after all their vehicles met or exceeded average reliability ratings, something that saw a boost with improvements to the Impreza WRX models. At the same time, the Honda Odyssey and Civic both fell short of their predecessors, costing the company points in their standings.

In fact, Honda didn’t even take second place this year — Mazda managed to win that spot with similarly improved models.

Honda loyalists may bemoan the latest results, but at least Toyota stoics can take solace in the fact their perennial list-finalist still won five of the top 10 picks.

Finally it’s also worth mentioning that despite coming in last place, Chrysler improved eight points this year, compared to Subaru’s two-point climb to victory.

In celebration of the smaller company emerging victorious, click through our gallery of the pugnacious Impreza WRX below.

This beauty (or beast), depending on your perspective, is available for sale in Plaistow, N.H. There are a couple of questions that arise. First: Was there a demand for 2007 Subaru B9 Tribeca LTD. limos? Answer: Yes. The ad states that this limo is used… meaning someone actually paid money to be dropped off to their special occasion in it. Second: How many of these Subaru limos were made? We can’t answer that, but if this bad boy peaks your interest you could corner the market on drunken soccer moms that need a special ride for a girl’s night out.

For a mere $75,000, the ugly limousine could be yours. That price includes a DVD entertainment system, a multi disc CD changer, an LCD monitor, rear beverage holders and a bar – everything you need to get the party started in style. If you’re interested (or if you think we made this up and you need proof), head over to Singer Subaru & Used Car Superstore’s website.

You never forget your first car, it’s special. Now Subaru wants you to share your story. As part of its 2012 Subaru Impreza campaign, the automaker has launched FirstCarStory.com, a cool site that lets you tell the story of your first car with animation.

Using an animation generator, you’re able to lovingly recreate your first car and share it with the world via an animated video, complete with music and narration. Then, using text-to-video technology, FirstCarStory.com turns words and phrases into custom animations.

Here’s how it works: the site’s home page features the car generator, which you can use to recreate your first car down to the smallest detail. Then you move onto story entry page, where you type out the story behind the car. Once you’ve finished typing it out, the animation generator tool isolates key words and populates visuals. As well, you can pick key words and phrases that highlight your story.

If you really want to make your story stand out, you can a personal narrative to go along with the animation. To finish it off, you choose a soundtrack to complete the video.

And what good is a great story without an audience to view your masterpiece? It’s a good thing you can tag your Facebook friends in the video. As well, you can share the video across a variety of social media platforms and see how your story shared common elements with other stories on the user community.

Start working on your directorial debut on the FirstCarStory.com website.

Back in December we saw the Subaru BRZ GT300 in a promotional video showing off what it’ll look like on the track, and now we have some legitimate (as in, non-promotional) footage of the race car getting some shakedown test runs out at Fuji Speedway in Japan.

In preparation of the 2012 Super GT series that will start at the end of March, Subaru and other teams have already started testing their new vehicles for this year’s season. Fortunately the weather cooperated for at least one good day of testing for Subaru, and we look forward to seeing all the new cars this year and how well they’ll be doing.

As expected, the BRZ GT300 looks absolutely gorgeous out on the track at full speed, and only makes us that much more impatient for its American release.

Check out two videos below of the BRZ GT300 hitting the track.

NHTSA issued out a recall for 2012 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles due to an issue with the side curtain airbags. According to the report, an incorrect propellant mixture for the initiator component was used that can result in an insufficient output of compressed gas.

As a result, the side curtain airbags may not deploy. The vehicles impacted by this recall are those that were manufactured in between December 1, 2011 and December 23, 2011. Subaru will be contacting owners of the affected vehicles, 381 in total, and will replace one or both side curtain air bag modules for free. The safety recall will begin during or before early April 2012. Concerned owners can reach Subaru at (800) 782-2783.

Let’s go ahead and call the Subaru BRZ the fraternal twin to the Toyota GT 86… or is it a triplet to the Scion FR-S?

Well whatever it is, the BRZ will now come in a stripped down variant just like the GT 86 RC model, but the BRZ RA will be a little more appealing with the bumpers painted.

Other than that, the BRZ RA will be just like the GT 86, coming with 16-inch steel wheels, unpainted door handles and mirror caps, no fog lights and some of the interior amenities also removed including the air conditioning and stereo. Performance-wise, the factory rear limited-slip differential has been tossed out – assuming those that purchase this model will get an aftermarket unit – and the rear brakes are no longer vented.

The Subaru BRZ RA is priced slightly higher than the Toyota GT 86 RC, coming in at 2,058,000 Yen or around $26,900 based on today’s conversion rates. Either way, it’s a whole lot less than the standard model – almost a $6,500 in savings.

2013 Scion FR-S Review AI3U0019

The Toyota GT 86, or Scion FR-S as it will be called in North America, isn’t available yet, but it’s already generating tuner buzz.

We were satisfied with the stock 200-horsepower boxer engine during our review in December, but that’s not quite enough power for some of the folks in the hachi-roku forums. Tetsuya Tada, the car’s chief engineer is encouraging the conversation.

“Some Americans already put a 5.0-liter engine in a Mazda roadster. There are fanclubs who want to do the same with our car. There is no rule to limit that. As manufacturers, we can’t do that. We have to give guarantees. We need to build cars that last. Tuners can try. We welcome that,” Tada said.

The 5.0-liter Mazda mod he’s talking about is, of course, the Monster Miata which gets a Mustang V8 shoehorned surprisingly well in place of it’s stock four banger.

While we don’t see the need to tinker with Toyota’s formula, it’s easy to understand the urge.

“As it is, only highly skilled drivers can make full use of the stock engine. Some people may like to have a higher speed in the straightaway, but there are lots of other cars they can choose,” Tada said,

He even teased the idea of putting a more potent engine into future models, though we aren’t holding our breath.

“For our current engine, we cooperated with Subaru. Maybe we [will] cooperate with Porsche or someone else next time. You can partner with anybody in the world these days.”

Subaru announced the continuation of their contingency program, the Subaru Rally Sport Program, for the 2012 Rally America National Championship. The Subaru Rally Sport Program, which is managed by Subaru of America with Vermont SportsCar as a partner, will continue to be North America’s most lucrative contingency program for rally racing.

Over $20,000 will be available at each Rally America National Championship event for Subaru drivers to earn. The program will continue to focus its support in the Super Production class (SP) where the top eligible Subaru SP driver can earn $7,000 each round, and second through 10th place will also receive generous (at least $500) payouts.

The SP class was originally created in 2009 by Rally America to offer a compromise between the top-tier Open class and the more restrictive Production GT (PGT) class. It’s a rally-racing class that is cost-effective for the racers in WRX or WRX STI models.

“Subaru as a brand, and our WRX and WRX STI models in particular, are widely recognized as having rally-DNA and being associated with performance and rallying in general,” said James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. “By announcing a continuation in the [Subaru] Rally Support Program, Subaru reaffirms our commitment to privateer entrants campaigning our products in Rally America events and to the growth of rally in the United States.”

Subaru of America will also offer a $200 “start fund” to any eligible Subaru entered in a Rally America Regional rally that runs concurrent to a national event weekend.

Subaru has announced that Andrew Aquilante and Bret Spaude will return as factory team drivers for their entry in the Grand Sport (GS) class of the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The first round of the series will take place at Daytona International Speedway on January 27th, 2012.

Subaru will be fielding a race-prepped 2012 four-door WRX STI, developed specifically to compete with all the other 400-hp vehicles in the class. Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) has been working on a technical progression for the number-35 STI during the off-season and appears to be optimistic heading into round one of the championship.

SRRT Principal Joe Aquilante noted, “We’ve enjoyed a very productive off-season, and our team is looking forward to getting back to the business of racing our Subaru WRX STI.  Our drivers have been focusing on honing their physical fitness while our technical staff has been diligently progressing our car development plan.  To say that we’re excited for Daytona is an understatement.”

Round one of the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge starts January 27th at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL.

Subaru recently launched the limited edition WRX STI S206 Challenge Package model in Japan, a higher performance version of the already impressive STI. It’s existence, however, is directly related to this car, the S206 racer.

On display for the first time (as far as we know) since winning the SP3T class at last year’s Nurburgring 24 Hour race both the street and race cars share some attractive performance goodies. Along with an up-rated version of the factory 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine with 316 hp (not to mention a long list of suspension modifications and a retuned ECU on the street car), both vehicles get a carbon fiber roof and a massive carbon rear spoiler.

See all the pics of the racer below and check out AutoGuide’s complete 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon coverage here.

First unveiled at the LA Auto Show late last year the Subaru BRZ STI Concept is no longer just a hint at things to come. Just a month ago at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese automaker officially drew back the covers on the production BRZ (while Toyota did the same with its GT 86).

An already impressive machine (read our review of its sibling, the Scion FR-S here), the BRZ makes 200-hp, has an amazing weight balance and a low center of gravity. The STI concept takes the car’s performance a step further with custom aerodynamics, larger 18-inch wheels, a light weight carbon fiber hood, custom exhaust and a carbon fiber roof – further lowering the car’s center of gravity.

Living up to its name, Subaru tuning company and race team Prova has unveiled its “Black Edition” BRZ sports car at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The wild tuner-car-meets-race-car gets matte black ground effects with orange pinstriping, matched out back by a significantly-sized matte-painted spoiler.

Also of note are huge 19-inch Enkei wheels with sticky Michelin tires, which house enormous 6-piston front brake calipers. Other add-ons include twin hood vents to keep the car’s namesake cool, while custom fender gilles add some added Subaru flare.

One final feature worth pointing out is the dual center-exit exhaust – a look that’s sure to catch on.

The past 20 years were pretty stable in the automotive industry. Mostly predictable releases with a steady rate for manufacturers to introduce new models that seemed like a consistant recipe for success.

Then, suddenly with the start of the current model year, things changed. In fact, it looks like this is just the start of a serious upswing in new releases. According to a story published on CNN Money, the auto industry replaced 16 percent of its fleet annually between 1991 and 2011.

That figure jumped to 23 percent with the 2012 model year, which started in October. Apparently keeping this fresh is the snake oil for successful car companies, because next year that number will grow to 32 percent, effectively doubling the rate new models hit the market. Given this manufacturer mayhem, we decided to round up the new cars you should expect to see soon.

Honda is an interesting case as they’ve recognized that their luxury brand, Acura, is simply being outdone by the competition at every turn. They decided to completely redesign their line to quell complaints that their cars are little more than rebadged Hondas. The first to look for: their new ILX compact sedan. As for Honda, they are already planning to release a new generation Civic after the media chastised them for an uninspired release.

Next up, Nissan. While they don’t hold a big market share in the U.S., Carlos Ghosn, their CEO is making plans to expand the 8.2 percent they have now to ten by 2015. In order to do that, they are revamping half of their entire line. Nissan is targeting the burgeoning EV market with their Leaf, which first became available last year. Look for updated Altimas, Sentras and Pathfinders in the near future.

Toyota suffered after the tsunami, but is coming back with a fury. The automaker is releasing a brand-new sports car, the FR-S, developed in partnership with Subaru and set to sell with a Scion badge. The RAV-4 and Lexus ES sedan will also get updates.

Chrysler will move toward smaller cars, something the brand has historically struggled with. The shrinkage can be attributed to Fiat, their new owners, and how their new 40 mpg Dodge Dart borrows heavily from the Italian engineers.

Ford and GM are trying to hang on to their chunky market shares, 17 and 19.7 percent respectively. Both companies are following the industry strategy: refreshing their popular sellers and releasing redesigned cars in their luxury brands. Look for a re-engineered Lincoln MKZ from Ford and Cadillac‘s new compact ATS and larger XTS sedans from GM.

Finally, there are some changes in the pipeline for German luxury cars. Audi just confirmed that their compact Q3 SUV will be sold in the U.S., along with the re-release of the compact A2 sedan. Mercedes-Benz is opting to offer their smaller B-Series and A-Series cars to remain competitive in the Yankee market.
