The automotive world is filled with comparison tests, but these usually are held between two or more cars that are currently on sale.

What Inside Line did was pit an old Datsun 510 versus a new Nissan Juke. You might think that the Juke would have an unfair advantage, but the 510 they brought out to this comparo was not an ordinary, run of the mill model. No, it is a rally spec version that has been gutted of its interior to save weight and been given a roll cage for safety. It also has skid plates to protect its parts.

The Juke on the other hand was a completely stock model. Both cars recorded their time on a 2.6-mile gravel road.

And the winner is… well you’ll have to watch the video to find out which was just less than a second quicker.

Our friends to the north have been keeping busy by choosing their pick for the car and truck of the year, before snow takes over.

So over the last week, the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) had assembled in the Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario to see which cars are the best in their category. The winners in each category will then go head to head with each other to name just one Car of the Year and Truck of the Year, which will be announced at the Toronto International Auto Show on February 16, 2012.

For now, here is the list of winners per category:

BEST NEW SMALL CAR (under $21k) – Hyundai Accent

BEST NEW SMALL CAR (over $21k) – Hyundai Elantra

BEST NEW FAMILY CAR (under $30k) – Kia Optima

BEST NEW FAMILY CAR (over $30k) – Kia Optima Hybrid

BEST NEW LUXURY CAR – Mercedes-Benz C350 4MATIC

BEST NEW PRESTIGE CAR (over $75k) – Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC

BEST NEW SPORTS/PERFORMANCE CAR (under $50k) – Hyundai Veloster

BEST NEW SPORTS/PERFORMANCE CAR (over $50k) – BMW 1M

BEST NEW SUV/CUV (under $35k) – Dodge Journey

BEST NEW SUV/CUV ($35k-$60k) – Volkswagen Touareg TDI

BEST NEW SUV/CUV (over $60k) – BMW X3

Interestingly, the only American brand to have a category winner is Dodge, and the country with the most winners on this list is S. Korea, while no Japanese car made the cut.

Love it or hate, but the Chevrolet Camaro has lots of fans, and they are never shy to show their appreciation for the car. At a recent contest held by the Bowtie brand, 125,000 fans voted on what they think is the best Chevy ever made, and the winner is…. the 1969 Camaro, edging out the Chevelle SS as a fan favorite.

Tom Peters, who has designed many Chevrolets over the years, including the C6 Corvette, was very pleased with this nod to the ’69 Camaro, especially since he fell in love with one when he was 14 and he now currently owns one. Peters said; “the ’69 Camaro is not only one of the best vehicles in Chevrolet’s history but one of the best vehicles ever.”

He adds that; “Today, the ’69 Camaro has become one of the best examples of timeless design in the industry. Like the very best designs, the Camaro is much more than just a machine because it evokes powerful emotions in people of all ages. That’s why we looked to the ’69 for inspiration when designing the fifth-generation Camaro, and why the ’69 Camaro is an example of the timeless vehicles Chevrolet will strive to deliver for the next 100 years.”

It is worth noting that the current Camaro is among the best selling sportscars on the planet currently. So while enthusiasts and auto critics might not have much love for the new Camaro, the buying public begs to differ.

The SCORE Baja 1000 is one of the toughest races on the planet, which tests man and machine to the absolute limit. Despite its tough nature, this race still attracts many teams and drivers. Team BFGoodrich for instance has 23 drivers wanting to have a go in this race, but only six can compete.

While two of the six will be automatically crowned champions at the SCCA National Runoffs. The other four will have to depend the whims of voters. In a format similar to reality TV shows, Team BFGoodrich will ask you to vote for your favorites from the 21 remaining drivers.

The competition will be set-up like a Race of Champions gathering, with drivers competing with each other to win points and fan votes. The four highest scorers will join the previously selected two drivers and compete in the Baja 1000.

Cadillac has just released its new ‘Competition’ commercial highlighting the brand’s performance side with the CTS-V sedan blasting along Germany’s famed Nürburgring. But more than that, the new spot recognizes where its inspiration came from and where the brand is heading.

Rather than talk about old Caddys, Cadillac directly states that the CTS-V’s was born from the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 and a desire to best those two models. This Cadillac achieved, setting a Nürburgring record for a sedan of 7:59 seconds.

The ad then goes on to state that as a brand Cadillac doesn’t see its “world’s fastest production sedan” record as “something to cherish, but rather a starting line from which to keep pushing.” And if the CTS-V is just the start, we can’t wait to see what they’ll do to top it.
