Engines are getting smaller and more efficient, while automakers continue to search for the best balance between performance and fuel efficiency.

In Europe, Volkswagen turned to a small 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine to power its more compact models. Now Hyundai is joining the party with its own 1.2-liter, turbo four.

Unfortunately the Korean automaker didn’t disclose performance figures for its new T-GDi Kappa powerplant, instead saying it will emit “less than 100 grams of CO2 per kilometer.”

The first Hyundais to be equipped with the new 1.2-liter turbo-four should hit European showrooms before the end of the year. It’s believed that it’ll find a home in the Hyundai i20 and i30 and possibly the Kia Picanto and Cee’d. We should be hearing more about performance figures once the T-GDi Kappa actually starts showing up in cars.
