Volkswagen enthusiasts may loathe the new Jetta and the German automaker’s decision to build bigger, cheaper, more American cars. But VW’s new product push for the U.S. market isn’t entirely a slap in the face of Vee-Dub fans. There’s still the Jetta GLI.
Set to debut at Chicago Auto Show next week, the GLI model will offer the more potent 200-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine – the same powerplant that makes the GTI so much fun. Volkswagen has said it will hit a claimed 6.7 second 0-60 mph time, or (oddly enough) 6.8 seconds with the DSG automatic.
Perhaps more importantly, however, the GLI will get a proper multi-link independent rear suspension – just like all Jettas get over in Europe.
Combined with what will no doubt be a stiffer suspension, some new wheels and a few trim upgrades, the GLI will help appease the VW fanboys as the automaker’s volume Jetta models help it achieve new sales goals in the U.S.
