Old Does Not Mean Awful
Last week we pointed out some of the most geriatric cars on the market, vehicles that are stodgy, dated or otherwise un-cool. In the process we totally lampooned senior citizens, making fun of them every chance we had.

Are you self-conscious? Don’t like to stand out in a crowd? Would you rather blend into the background than be the center of attention? Well, when it comes to the automotive world, you are in luck. Some vehicles seem to have skipped class when it came time for their styling lesson. This is not to say they are ugly, but more that they lack any style whatsoever.
We’ve all heard the clichés to describe these anonymously styled cars; plain vanilla, beige, white bread, etc. We like to think of them as stylistically-challenged. Regardless, if you don’t want to draw any undue attention towards yourself, here are ten vehicles that are guaranteed to blend into the landscape.
Volvo new U.S. CEO, John Maloney, is predicting nothing but good things for the company, and has released some details on how he plans to grow the Swedish brand.
Starting with new vehicles, Volvo has announced that in 2014 we can expect a flexible mid to large size platform that will be used to replace more than one vehicle, starting with the XC90 crossover. The following year, in 2015, Volvo says that we will see an all new S80 sedan.
A brand new four cylinder naturally aspirated or turbocharged engine will be unveiled in 2014 along with the new vehicle lineup that will replace the existing six-cylinder and V8 Volvo motors. Plug in hybrids are also expected from the Swedish automaker, but there have been no official announcements as to when we may see those in the U.S. market.
To prepare for the upcoming year, Volvo has increased production on the XC60 crossover and the S60 sedan at Swedish plants to ensure there is no supply shortages, as there were in 2011, which held back some vehicles from getting to dealer showrooms when they were in demand.
Maloney predicts that Volvo’s total sales for this year will have a 25 percent increase from last year, a surprising number when you consider Volvo has no new models this year, only a facelift for the XC90.

Volvo is adding a bit of high-end luxury to their popular S80 and V70 models with special edition models. Starting with their sedan, the S80 will have an Executive edition featuring an espresso brown or black leather instrument panel. The soft-leather seats are ventilated with a massage function and the center console now sports aluminum touches. On the dash is a classy, analog clock while the door panels are finished off with leather. Those looking for extra luxury in the S80 Executive can opt for a fridge with Swedish crystal glasses for the rear bench.
For the V70 wagon, the R-Design features LED turn indicators in the mirrors, that are now covered in silk metal. 18-inch wheels are bolted on all four corners from Ixion in a diamond-cut finish. For the interior, the R-Design sports leather upholstery in off-black and black floormats. Those interested in the R-Design package will be happy to hear that it’s available for all V70 trim models.
No pricing was announced.

NHTSA has announced that just over 6,000 2011 Volvos will be recalled due to an issue that could see a fuel cutoff engaged due to the engine computer’s parameter being too sensitive.
Drivers could have the fuel cutoff engaged at an inappropriate time, causing the engine to stall. The defect is present in the 2011 S60, S80, XC60 and XC70 models. Volvo will update the engine computer software free of charge something around December 10th. Owners can contact Volvo at 1.800.458.1552 or at email@example.com.
Volvo is recalling nearly 10,000 cars in the United States due to the possibility of air bags failing to deploy properly. The recall involves 9,746 2010-11 S80 and XC70s and 2011 XC60s and 2010 V70s.
Volvo said that the airbag issue involved “an intermittent fault in the driver’s airbag clock spring wiring connector for the supplemental restraint system.”
Volvo said it has received 142 complaints worldwide regarding the condition, calling it “potentially critical.” Volvo dealers will install a metal shim in the driver’s airbag to remedy the issue.

Volvo made a bit of a mistake with their 2007-2010 S80s; it turns out that the tire pressure labels affixed to the vehicles are incorrect, and so is the information inputted into the tire pressure monitoring system.
Volvo will replace the stickers and re-flash the TPMS software, and encourages owners to contact them at 1-800-458-1552 or email customercare -at- volvoforlife.com. Volvo claims to have found the problem itself, and fortunately, nobody has been injured as a result of this.

China’s Ministry of Commerce and its National Development and Reform Commission has signed off on a deal that will let Chinese carmaker Geely to purchase Volvo from Ford for $1.8 billion.
“We have received all approvals required from the central government,” Ning Shuyong a spokesman from Geely, told Reuters. “We are currently working on closing the deal.” China’s tight state control of the economy means that government approval is essential for any deals of this nature.
Geely is expected to help double Volvo’s output by investing in a new Chinese factory to produce cars under the Swedish nameplate. Geely is said to be willing to spend another $900 million to ensure that Volvo stays competitive. Currently, Volvo assembles the S40 and S80 sedans at the Ford-Chongqing Changan Automobile, but will likely have to move production due to the sale.
