2009 Audi Cars
One of the pillars of the German luxury car business, Audi builds vehicles ranging from the tiny A1 minicar and popular-in-Europe A3, to the Q7 luxury SUV, to the R8 exotic sports car. Volume sellers include the A4, A6 and Q5 crossover, while a recent push has seen innovative new models like the A5 and A7. Launched in 1998, the Audi TT sports coupe and convertible put the brand in the spotlight with dramatic new styling. Audi has a strong tradition of performance S models, while ultra high-performance cars bear the RS badge.
The established luxury brand of the VW Group empire, Audi was bought from Daimler-Benz in 1966. The brand name comes from founder August Horch, who’s last name means ‘listen’, or in Latin, ‘audi’. Dating back to 1909, in 1932 Audi merged with three other German automakers (Horch, DKW and Wanderer) to form Auto Union and creating the brand’s distinct four ring logo – one ring for each original automaker. Audi’s true claim to fame is its Quattro all-wheel drive technology that first debuted on the aptly named 1980 Audi Quattro.
