2011 Lotus Cars

Lotus began as a constructor of racing cars, and has a long history of success in Formula 1. The Lotus Evora is the only vehicle currently sold in North America, but new versions of the Lotus Esprit, Lotus Elise, Lotus Elan and Lotus Elite are all slated to debut within the decade, as the company takes on a new direction under controversial CEO Dany Bahar.

Lotus founder Colin Chapman was a pioneer of using lightweight technology to win races – even at the expense of his drivers’ safety. Chapman and Lotus also invented modern aerodynamics with their Formula 1 cars, but their road cars have often been assembled with equal parts ingenuity and scavenging from other car makers parts bins. Despite this, their products have remained iconic, with the Elan, Europa and Esprit still held in high esteem. Lotus introduced their Elise to the North American market in 2005, and the vehicle became an instant classic, alongside its hardtop twin the Exige. In 2010, Lotus launched the Evora, a competitor to the Porsche Cayman, which serves as Lotus’ sole product on sale today.

Anyone who’s familiar with Lotus and its founder Colin Chapman will no doubt also recognize its famous “to add speed, add lightness” mantra.
