The all-aluminum-bodied Audi A8 is offered in two lengths-standard and long (designated the A8 L), and both models utilize a 350-horsepower, 4.2L direct-injection V8.

Both models are matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a Tiptronic function, which allows the driver to manually select gears when desired. With this powertrain, the A8 can get from zero to 60 mph in only 5.9 seconds, according to Audi.

All A8s utilize Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system, which transfers power from side to side as well as front to back which improves handling and all-weather capability. The Servotronic steering system adjusts assist and steering feel with vehicle speed for improved handling.

All A8 models get the Audi Adaptive Air Suspension, which automatically adjusts the damping rates to compensate for road and driving conditions. The driver can also change the ride height and firmness as desired with four modes. The available Sport Package adds an additional setting with more aggressive damping.

The A8 comes with a full roster of safety features, including front and rear side airbags for outboard occupants, the Sideguard side-curtain airbag for outboard occupant head and chest protection, plus active front head restraints and knee airbags for front occupants. Airbag deployment is optimized with six different crash sensors. Stability control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist are also standard.

The A8 has distinctive LED lighting inside; it's appointed with Calcona leather upholstery and one of three different wood trims. Standard high-tech equipment on the A8 includes adaptive front lighting, an advanced parking system with rearview camera, a DVD-based navigation system, a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system with noise-reduction technology and CD changer, rain-sensor wipers, and Advanced Key keyless entry. A 4-zone climate control, power door and trunklid closers, electric side and rear sunshades and a rear-seat entertainment system with twin 6.5-inch screens are also standard. Optional on both is a more powerful, fully digital 1000-watt Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 14 speakers.

Special options on the A8 include a solar-cell sunroof that circulates fresh air while the car is parked, dual-paned security glass, power lumbar support for the rear seats, and rear climate control. Available for 2010 on the A8 L is the 100 Years of Audi Package, which features silk beige leather, Gray Vavona wood inlays, an Alcantara headliner, special wheels and unique interior and exterior highlights. For 2010, Audi's flagship A8 sedan receives few changes, though the W12 engine option has been dropped, as has the sporty S8 variant, leaving only the A8 and A8 L models, both powered by a 4.2-liter V8. A new 100 Years of Audi Package celebrates the marquee's century of innovation and is exclusive to the A8 L. The 2010 Audi A8 is separated from its competition thanks to its standard all-wheel-drive quattro system.
