2012 Jaguar XF Overview
All Jaguar XF models get one of a range of 5.0L V8s, offered via four trim levels: base, Portfolio, Supercharged and XFR. The base XF models sport 385 horses from the naturally-aspirated engine, while Supercharged versions get a 470-horsepower version and the XFRs receive one that produces 510. Even in normally aspirated tune, the XF has strong acceleration on par with some of the fastest German sports sedans. According to Jaguar, the standard XF can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while the top-of-the-line XFR can do it in just 4.7 seconds. The XF's gear selector uses a unique rotary design that Jaguar claims is intuitive and also saves interior space. The transmission includes a Sequential Shift System, which enables the driver to command gear shifts of the 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddles.
The XF offers, according to Jaguar, the best torsional stiffness in its class, and so is able to offer impressive handling and performance while also allowing a smooth and well-controlled ride. The variable ratio power-assisted steering offers reduced effort while parking plus better control at high speed.
Supercharged and XFR models feature special tires, brakes and trim, as well as Jaguar's Adaptive Dynamics suspension system. The XFR also adds quicker steering, 20-inch wheels and unique exterior styling.
The interior departs from the typical luxury-car mold with a new design direction. As with other Jaguar models the XF uses high-grade materials, including supple leathers and a striking matte-metallic finish. The XF also features real Rosewood veneer, offset with aluminum highlights. Air conditioning vents are completely flush with the dashboard until the ignition is switched on, when they rotate to an open position, overhead console lamps operate through a special touch- or proximity-sensing system, and the interior is bathed in cool blue lighting at night. There are numerous storage compartments inside and front cup holders are large enough for a 44-ounce beverage cup.
The available top-of-the-range, 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins special surround sound system has been specifically designed for the XF's cabin; it has surround sound processing, 17 speakers. The XF's audio systems are fully compatible with portable audio players or USB memory sticks.
An extensive list of electronic driving aids is offered on the XF including anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and cornering brake control. The electronic stability control system includes Understeer Control Logic, which decelerates the car and helps restore grip in extreme maneuvers or in the loss of traction. The XF's dynamic stability control system offers two different modes, including a "Trac DSC" mode that allows more slip before intervening, for more enthusiastic driving. XF models also offer a winter driving mode.
A Portfolio trim features special softgrain leather with contrasted stitching and unique trim colors, a premium suede headliner, 16-way driver and 12-way front passenger climate-controlled seats, heated steering wheel, rear sunblind and 20-inch wheels.
The Sport package can be added to the Portfolio trim to add aerodynamic elements, adaptive headlamps, a rear spoiler, an upgraded power-adjustable seats and a heated steering wheel.
High-tech features available on the XF include front and rear parking aids, a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and voice-activated controls for the navigation system and hands-free calling interface.
2012 Jaguar XF Model Changes
The XF's trims get a little reworked. The XF now offers a base, Portfolio, Supercharged and XFR.
The 2012 XF gets bi-xenon headlamps as standard equipment. The standard stereo is better than last year too, with 2 USB inputs, 10 speakers and HD radio. The optional stereo is upgraded as well. It's now a 1200-watt surround system with 17 speakers.
The Sport Package, available on the Portfolio trim, adds a number of aerodynamic elements, adaptive headlamps, a rear spoiler, upgraded power-adjustable seats and a heated steering wheel.
The standard stereo on the XFR has been upgraded to a 1200-watt surround stereo standard.
2012 Jaguar XF Value
Jaguar's 2012 XF, with its sleek, coupe-like shape, sport-sedan performance and stunning interior, competes very well with sport sedans such BMW's 5-Series, the Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz' E-Class. Like other Jaguar models, the XF promises a uniquely British personality compared to other luxury cars. The high-performance XFR is a very serious performer, competing ably among world-class tuner sedans from both BMW's M division and Mercedes-Benz' AMG shop.
2012 Jaguar XF Strengths
Blistering performance; stunning interior appointments; wide range of quality materials.
