Review on the VW Passat 1.8 TSI Sportline (CBU)By Chris, Jan 30, 2013Luxury family car. Interior not that impressive, but still better than Korean/Japanese cars. Economical if driven below rpm 3.Once you hit 180km/hour, its difficult to push for more. Soundproofing is good for city driving, however on the highway, some noise exists. ...moreAge Group 25-34
Comparison ReviewBy David White, Sep 25, 2012I test drove everything under the sun before I took this one out. The interior is HUGE for a car that gets this sort of gas milage. I needed something wtih gas milage without compromise to power. I drove the hybrids, gas model accords, civics everything. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this vehicle and I am extremely pleased with my decision. They are hard to get though so be dillegent! Interior: Spacious, fitting four adults comfortable. The controls are easy to navigate. The steering wheel appears to have a lot going on, but the salesman explained the controls are like a mouse on a computer. Once explained, its easy to navigate. The trunk is huge which was a huge factor. I haul a lot of gear to and from work. It fitts all seven of my bags in the trunk. That is more than I can say about a hybrid which uses the trunk space for battery packs. The leatherette seating is extremely comfortable. Only negative on the interior is the lack of a power seat on the passenger side. It's a little quirky to get the seat where you like it. Drivetrain: The TDI was a huge factor. I am a huge fan of clean burning diesel engines as they last! The engine is remarkably quiet. It is a diesel and you can hear it from the outside. however' you drive from the inside and cannot hear the engine. The DSG transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. It is different to drive if you have never owned a diesel. When braking be prepared for the engine to do a lot of it for you. When the DSG downshifts, the backpressure of the diesel will slow you down in a hurry. So for first time drivers be prepared, you're not slamming on the brakes, you need to learn how to drive it! The DSG does offer a weird quirk when backing up a driveway or incline. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my Passat but will take it in on the three month service to have it looked at. It feels like a brake is dragging while backing up an incline. Exterior: Couldn't be happier. The car has extremely clean lines and gets looks everywhere I go. To make the car look that much better, I recommend tinting the windows, all of them. Yes illegal in some states, but man does the car look great. Comparison: Currently I'm getting around 46mpg on the highway. Combined city and highway around 38. My foot isn't always in the gas pedal as this is a gas saver, not a rocket ship. The DSG transmission will propel you to freeway speeds with little problem. If you feel the need to roast your tires this is not the car for you. The road noise is exceptional with very little noise in the cabin. Diesel fuel is more expensive than gas. Whehn your looking at this type of fuel economy, compare the other vehicles. Most hybrids take premium fuel which is at or more expensive than diesel. Also, if you're purchasing for the long haul as I am, remember all tholse older accords and camry's on the road. They get loud. The hybrid engines whine like they're going to explode. There is no battery pack to replace! There are a multitude of reasons to purchase this for the long haul. The easiest indicator is trying to find one of these used. People don't sell them, they love tehm. ...moreStyling, TDI, Gas Milage, Space, Comfort

F LandaBy Friedel Landa, Apr 26, 2012The new Passat TDI stands alone in a category of its own. No other car in the market offers such a large interior space and 31/43 mpg performance for under $35,000.00 The car is fun to drive and easy to operate, has all the equippment that a premium model should have and the exterior design is classic and verty european. On top of that it is made in America. (So kudos to VW to invest in our country during such difficult times). ...moreClasic European Style, interior disign and equipment, great mpg and robust handling.
