2013 Audi Q5 quattro 4dr 2.0T Premium User Reviews

  • Fun to drive and luxurious
By Marcus Robertson (I am an Owner), Apr. 17, 2013
Finally, the Q5 comes with Audi's supercharged 3.0L engine which meant a visit to the local dealership to trade in my old and outdated A4. Simply put, the Q5 is fun-to-drive despite its size and insid... more

2013 Audi Q5 Overview

The 2013 Audi Q5 is offered with two different engines. A 211-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a new supercharged 272-hp, 3.0L V6. Both are mated to an 8-speed Titronic automatic transmission, and both feature Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system, which sends about 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels under most driving conditions; on slippery surfaces or for better stability, the system will reapportion torque as needed. The 2.0L also helps to power the new hybrid model, and is paired with an electric motor. Together, the system is capable of an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

With car-like underpinnings adapted in part from the Audi A4 sport sedan, the Q5 drives and handles much like that car, despite its relatively tall cabin. The Q5 is quite compact on the outside--it's about as easy to park as a compact sedan--yet there's a lot of passenger space within. Nice, supportive front seats afford a great view out, with a center console that has an adjustable armrest up top, while there's a surprising amount of legroom in back. The back seats in the Q5 slide fore and aft to balance the amount of cargo space and legroom, while the seatbacks recline; the seats also fold forward to allow a large cargo space or, when up, there's still a pass-through for long objects. The Q5's long wheelbase, in addition to helping maximize passenger space, also helps improve ride quality.

The Audi Q5 offers a long list of safety features that includes electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and hill descent control, with a special off-road mode for the electronics that allows a little more slip. The stability control system in the Q5 will recognize when the roof rack is loaded and adjust accordingly. Front side thorax bags, along with head-curtain side bags for both rows are all standard. Rear side-thorax bags are available.

Leather upholstery is standard on the Q5, along with power front seats, telescopic steering, keyless entry with an alarm, 3-zone climate control, a trip computer and a hard cargo cover along with cargo nets. The sound system that's standard even on the base model is a 10-speaker, 180-watt system including Sirius Satellite Radio, an auxiliary input and an SD card slot, while Bluetooth and an iPod interface are optional. Premium Plus models add a power tailgate, heated front seats with driver memory, heated folding mirrors, xenon headlamps, LED running lamps and a panorama sunroof. Available only with the Premium Plus, as options, are a hard-drive-based navigation system that accepts voice prompts and includes a rearview camera and HD radio and an amazing 14-speaker, 505-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The top Prestige trim is only offered with the V6 and the 2.0L hybrid. It brings a host of high-end luxury and tech features including heated washer nozzles, Audi side assist and a heated/cooled cup holder. An available Luxury Package brings expanded leather trim, while the S Line Package adds flashy 20-inch wheels, summer performance tires and a special steering wheel and shift paddles. The Audi Drive Select system, which adds three modes--Comfort, Automatic, Dynamic and Individual--that control the suspension, steering, engine/transmission response, is only offered on this top-of-the-line model.

2013 Audi Q5 Model Changes

The Audi Q5 receives some minor updates inside and out for 2013. For starters, the front grille has been tweaked, as have the Q5 wheel options. Three new interior colors and upholstery choices are available, while the steering wheel has also been updated. The biggest changes come in the engine bay. The turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder carries over, while a 272-hp supercharged 3.0L V6 replaces the naturally aspirated 3.2L V6. A hybrid drivetrain is also new, which utilizes the Q5's standard 2.0L turbo and an electric motor to produce 245 hp and 354-ft-lb of torque. EPA estimates peg the hybrid's return at 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway. All Q5s now benefit from an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Q5 hybrid starts at $51,795.

2013 Audi Q5 Value

With the 2.0 TFSI engine and 8-speed automatic, the 2013 Audi Q5 performs similarly to its V6-equipped big brother while being much more fuel-efficient. The standard Q5 has an EPA highway rating of 27 mpg. The Q5 has the longest wheelbase in its class and that gives it an especially smooth, settled ride. With the new supercharged 3.0L V6, the Q5 has an excellent towing capacity as well. The Q5's rear-biased quattro all-wheel drive system brings more driving enjoyment than is typical for enthusiasts and those who might rather be driving a sport sedan, while the interior has just as much versatility and flexibility as other utility vehicles in this class. Add to the mix a new 2.0L hybrid, and the appeal of the 2013 Audi Q5 is hard to ignore.

2013 Audi Q5 Strengths

Strong performance; hybrid fuel economy; excellent ride quality; strong safety feature content list; excellent towing capability; available Audi Drive Select customization
