Laugh all you want!By Rebecca L (I am an Owner), Aug. 25, 2013The Smart Fortwo is a car for people that want the Smart Fortwo. It's hard to write a review about it, because if you don't like the car from the get go, nothing is going to persuade you otherwise. It... more
2013 Smart fortwo electric drive OverviewThe 2013 Smart fortwo Electric Drive utilizes an electric motor mounted in the same location as the gasoline engine on standard fortwos. The electric motor is powered by a 17.6-kW-hr lithium-ion battery and produces 47 horsepower and 95 ft-lb of "always-on" torque. A single-gear automatic completes the powertrain package, and the result is nearly 90 miles on a single charge, with a real-world miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) of 122 MPGe city and 93 MPGe on the highway. The Smart can be recharged from completely drained to fully charged in six hours when using a 240-volt outlet, while a 110-volt outlet will require extra time.
Electric fortwos contain the same safety features seen in gasoline versions, including Smart's tridion safety cell, eight airbags, electronic stability control and crumple zones meant to absorb the force of an impact. The Electric Drive offers halogen headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a stereo with USB inputs, manually adjustable seating and more, as well as two gauges placed on top of the dash, which track battery charge level and power being generated by the electric motor. The Electric Drive features brake regeneration, which captures power created during braking and coasting and utilizes it to add up to 30 kW-hr into the battery.
2013 Smart fortwo electric drive Model Changes
The Smart fortwo Electric Drive returns for 2013, in both coupe and cabriolet guise, though the diminutive EV features a thoroughly revamped powertrain. An all-electric magneto motor rated at 47 horsepower and 95 ft-lb of torque draws its juice from a 17.6-kW-hr lithium-ion battery, which is no longer sourced from Tesla. Smart claims that 74-hp bursts are capable for up to two minutes in "Kickdown Mode." The whole system is paired with a single-gear automatic. The car is EPA-rated at a combined 107 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). Smart has priced electric coupes at $25,000, while electric cabriolets will start at $28,000. Big federal tax incentives are available.
2013 Smart fortwo electric drive Value
The Smart caused a big splash in the U.S. upon its introduction in 2008, providing an economical and safe subcompact alternative for buyers in the market for a city car. The all-electric version takes the concept a step further, offering both low cost of use as well as zero emissions to the already popular subcompact. It's an excellent choice for buyers with short to moderate commutes living in large cities, as it's smaller than the Chevy Volt, Honda Civic Hybrid and Nissan Leaf, yet it offers gasoline-like performance up to 60 mph, all while keeping a range of around 90 miles from an 8-hour charge.
2013 Smart fortwo electric drive Strengths
Small size and maneuverability, zero emissions, 110-volt compatible; good range with an 8-hour charge
