2012 BMW Cars
The epitome of middle-class status symbols, the 3 Series is the cornerstone of BMW’s product lineup. Other core products include the 5 Series and 7 Series, as well as the X5, launched in 1999, and the X3 in 2004. BMW currently also sells the 1 Series, X1, 6 Series coupe and convertible and the Z4. In 2013 BMW will launch its “i” division of alternative powered vehicles including the i3 EV and i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. BMW is well-known for its M performance division, building cars like the M3, M5, X6 M, X5 M and 1M Coupe.
Born from the ashes of the First World War, when the company was no longer allowed to produce aircraft engines, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or Bavarian Motor Works first began building motorcycles in 1923 and then cars in 1928. Nearing financial ruin in 1959 the company bought the rights to the tiny Iso Isetta and fitted it with a BMW motorcycle engine, helping pave the way back to profitability. Modern historical highlights include the launch of the modern MINI brand in 1994, take over of Rolls-Royce in 1998 and the creation of the revolutionary iDrive system, which debuted on the 2001 7 Series.
