American Auto Repair Coverage Highlights

Overall Rating 3.4
Reputation 3.8
Coverage 3.7
Price 3.7
Transparency 3.0
Customer Service 3.0

American Auto Repair Coverage has been selling vehicle service contracts since 2012. Though the company is headquartered in Missouri, contracts are available to customers across the US. According to the American Auto Repair Coverage website, the company pays out around $22 million in claims each year.

American Auto Repair Coverage Extended Warranty Plans

AARC offers three levels of coverage—Enhanced, Comprehensive, and Ultimate—that range from enhanced powertrain plans to full bumper-to-bumper extended warranties. Details for each plan are described in the chart below.

  Ultimate Comprehensive Enhanced
Engine
Transmission
Transfer Case
Drive Axles
Air Conditioning
Cooling System
Fuel System
Alternator
Starter Motor
Heater
Suspension
High-Tech Parts
Master Cylinder
Exclusionary

As you can see, the Ultimate plan offers the most comprehensive protection, closely replicating a manufacturer’s warranty. This is an exclusionary contract, meaning that instead of listing every covered part, it only lists the parts that aren’t covered under the warranty.

According to the American Auto Repair Coverage website, there are also tailor-made contracts available. With this type of plan, covered components are flexible and drivers may customize what they want to be included.

Added Benefits

All plans are fully transferable and include the following additional benefits, which are standard for the industry:

  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Towing
  • Rental car reimbursement
  • Trip interruption protection

American Auto Repair Coverage Cost

Like with any aftermarket car warranty, the final price of an American Auto Repair Coverage plan will depend on the terms of your contract. Longer-lasting exclusionary coverage is likely to be the most expensive. The age and mileage on your vehicle will also impact cost, with older vehicles costing more to cover. You can purchase an extended warranty before your factory warranty expires to secure a lower rate.

We contacted American Auto Repair Coverage and requested pricing for a full coverage (Ultimate) contract on a 2017 Ford Explorer with 45,500 miles. The salesperson offered us the following terms:

American Auto Repair Coverage Cost
Coverage Term 5 years or 75,000 miles
Deductible $100
Payment Plan $116 per month for 24 months
Down Payment $150
Total Cost $2,934
Cost Per Year of Coverage $586.80

We also asked for quotes for basic powertrain coverage. We were offered a total cost of $2,494 for the same contract term. This is not much lower for significantly less coverage. Most car warranty companies do not offer especially cheaper terms for powertrain coverage on newer vehicles with less than 60,000 miles.

The price quoted above is very competitive for the industry. The cost per year of coverage is lower than the industry average, which is about $850 for this amount of coverage for this vehicle. A similar contract from most competitors is likely to cost upwards of $3,500.

Quotes and Claims Processes

To get a quote from American Auto Repair Coverage, call the customer service department at 855-897-2272. When we called to request a quote, the entire process took less than 10 minutes. Our customer service representative was courteous and straightforward. Some extended warranty salespeople are especially pushy and aggressive, but this was not our experience with AARC.

All contracts can be purchased over the phone and include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Claims

If you already have an American Auto Repair Coverage plan and need to file a claim, the process is simple. Call Concierge Claims Service, which will arrange a rental and help to schedule repairs. You can bring your vehicle to any repair facility certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE®), and AARC will pay the shop directly after repairs are completed. Customers only pay their deductible.

American Auto Repair Coverage Reviews and Ratings

American Auto Repair Coverage has a positive online reputation. The company has earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and, at the time of publication, holds a 4.55 out of 5-star customer rating. Only 11 complaints against the company have been filed through the BBB in the past three years.

Customers who did complain were upset about aggressive sales tactics and trouble canceling contracts. One negative review reads:

“The salesperson for this company was a merciless shark. He scared and intimidated my wife into buying a car warranty she never needed… This company, from top to bottom, has treated my wife and I in the worst ways possible.”
– Rob W. via BBB

While the review above is harrowing, it does not represent every customer’s experience with AARC. Here’s an example of a positive American Auto Repair Coverage review:

“[AARC] went above and beyond to solve an issue with the adjusters not wanting to pay for my repairs since I’m an Uber driver. I made them aware before I purchased my policy. Matrix refused to pay, so American stepped up to the plate… and paid for the repairs out of its own pocket.”
– Robert R. via BBB

American Auto Repair Coverage Extended Warranty: 3.4 Stars

American Auto Repair Coverage is certainly a provider worth looking into. Based on the quotes we received from the company, it appears to be one of the lower-cost options out there.

However, the company is not as established as some competitors. While it has a good online reputation, this reputation is based on very few customer reviews. AARC may not conduct the same volume of business as bigger companies and has therefore had less scrutiny.

American Auto Repair Coverage has enough of an online presence to confirm that the company is legitimate and has happy customers. While some customers reported aggressive sales tactics, there has not been enough of an established pattern for the BBB to lower the company’s business rating.

Top Recommendations for Extended Car Warranties

While American Auto Repair Coverage offers low rates and seems to be a reputable company, it is not your only option. When considering an extended car warranty, it’s smart to compare prices from multiple providers to make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck. Consider getting free quotes from two of our top-rated providers, Endurance and CARCHEX, to compare with American Auto Repair Coverage.

Endurance: Best Coverage

We think Endurance provides the best coverage because of its wide range of options and long contract terms. Endurance contracts extend as high as 15 years and 200,000 miles, which is exceptional for the industry. It’s also one of the only providers that offers joint coverage for mechanical breakdown repairs and routine maintenance services like oil changes.

All Endurance warranties also come with some of the best benefits in the industry. Drivers get trip interruption coverage, roadside assistance, and rental car reimbursement for the duration of their contracts, as well as a free year of Endurance Elite Membership. This program offers perks like free tire and key fob replacements, identity theft protection services, and $250 in member rewards to be used at select shopping, hotel, and dining establishments.

CARCHEX: Best Service

Our review team found that CARCHEX provides the best service for older vehicles. The company has five plan options, including one that’s geared toward higher-mileage cars, and can cover vehicles up to 10 years or 250,000 miles. These are some of the longest warranty terms available. Like Endurance, CARCHEX offers its customers trip interruption coverage, roadside assistance, and rental car reimbursement benefits.

CARCHEX holds an accredited A+ rating from the BBB. Customers praise the provider for its low prices and excellent customer service.
