Chevy is getting set to expand its lineup of Cruze offerings with a high higher performance version of the compact car set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show at the end of the month. According to the China Car Times, a new model with a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder will be offered the same engine that is currently offered in the Buick Excelle in China with 184-hp.

It’s not clear if GM has any plans to bring the 1.6T model to North America, but a more potent 4-cylinder is both need and expected in the Cruze lineup here, with the current top engine being a fuel economy-minded turbocharged 1.4-liter with 138-hp. Still, even at 184-hp, the 1.6T motor seems unlikely to take up the halo position as an SS model, with the Cobalt SS currently making 260-hp.
