Toyota is planning to create a hybrid version of every model in its lineup by 2020, utilizing the same architecture as the Prius’ groundbreaking hybrid system.

Toyota plans to produce more than 1 million hybrid systems in this year alone, and its reliability and cost advantages mean that Toyota is reluctant to make any radical changes to the architecture.

Regarding a “sporty” hybrid, Gerald Killman, Toyota’s powertrain executive, said that such a vehicle was indeed feasible for the Japanese automaker. “Our hybrid technology is adaptable,” he told Autocar “There is flexibility in the application of our hybrid system; we don’t want to develop a new one when we can give ours more character.”
