Toyota’s FT-86/FR-S sports car is set to arrive in 2012, with a sedan version to follow. While past rumors have suggested the FR-S (as it’s believed to be called in production form) will spawn a compact sports sedan, R0ad & Track reports that this four-door FR-S will in fact be the next Lexus IS. The underpinnings will be stretched to better accommodate the IS, but it’s unlikely the IS could grow too much using the FR-S architecture.

Rather than use a version of Subaru’s boxer 4-cylinder engine, the Lexus models will continue to get both a 2.5-liter and a 3.6-liter V6. (Although we have to think Toyota will come up with some turbocharged excitement for the next-gen IS).

Lexus is expected to debut its next-generation IS in later 2012 or 2013.
