BMW has announced it will reveal what it is calling the 5 Series ‘New Energy Vehicle’ at the Shanghai Motor Show next month. Based on the 5 Series long wheelbase version, sold exclusively in China, it will be a plug-in hybrid and is described by BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer as a car, “from China for China.”

With a long wheelbase 5 Series (hybrid or not) out of the question for North America, there’s a strong possibility that this car will come to North America in the standard 5 Series body as the evolution of the Concept 5 Series Active Hybrid. And with the Shanghai and New York auto shows overlapping, there’s a good chance that we’ll see the regular wheelbase version of this new car on our shores then.
