Fraught with delays and uncertainty, Texas’ latest race track, the Circuit of the Americas, is still under construction. Despite that, a digital version is ready to go, giving gamers the first crack at the new track.

Game developer Codemasters’ “2012 F1” video game will feature a finished version of the track, available for virtual test driving before the physical version opens. Last November construction halted abruptly because of funding concerns, but last-minute $25 million deal allowed the project to continue.

With some 100,000 fans expressing interest in events at the Austin location, the venue could shape up to be a moneymaker, but that potential hinges heavily on a timely completion — something the on-again-off-again construction couldn’t have helped.

Last December, the track was suposed to be ready by June 17, a rapidly approaching deadline that might mean the only way to see the track in action on time will be through a TV set and home gaming console.
