As impressive a hot hatch as the Focus ST is, Ford is planning something much more amazing with new reports that the Focus RS will make a comeback.
Axed when Ford introduced the current Focus model, the RS wasn’t part of the plan with the American automaker instead focusing on volume products. With surging profits and a more stable economy, Ford’s tune has changed.
“Our ‘One Ford’ policy has succeeded in pushing our mainstream products further than ever, and the next step is to provide customers with more exemplary, smaller-volume highlight products,” said Barb Samardzich,VP of product development for Ford Europe in an interview with AutoCar. “Planning doesn’t just have to be about the mainstream now; we can go to the edges again.”

While short of a direct Focus RS confirmation, separately, senior Ford execs have confirmed the hot hatch which is due on sale in 2015.
Describing ST models as sporty, Samardzich did say there is a demand for more race-focused models; and not just limited to the Focus RS. “There’s more room for more performance products across the range in the small, medium and large car segments,” said Samardzich. “A whole suite of such cars is what I have in mind.”
When it does arrive, expect the Focus RS to use a new 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, making as much as 350 hp, with a traditional limited slip differential and power headed to the front wheels.
