2014 Dodge Durango Diesel Coming to NY Auto Show

Dodge is bringing the 2014 Durango to the 2013 New York Auto Show next week, where it will apparently debut with the same 3.0-liter diesel engine that was recently introduced to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

While Chrysler did not reveal any details, Autocar says that the new Durango is set to get an eight-speed transmission and 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, both enhancements that were recently introduced on the new Grand Cherokee.

In the Grand Cherokee, the diesel puts out 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, numbers that aren’t likely to change if the engine comes over to the Durango. For fuel economy, the current Durango gets 16/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined in its most fuel efficient V6 two-wheel drive form, while it only achieves 13/20/15 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive and a V8.

In comparison, the Grand Cherokee diesel gets a 22/30 mpg city/highway rating with two-wheel drive, and 21/28 for the AWD, considerably better than the existing Durango, so expect a major jump in efficiency from the Durango, though it probably won’t be as good at the Grand Cherokee due to its heavier weight.

For looks, once again the Durango will follow the Grand Cherokees lead, and borrow some of its design cues. Those Grand Cherokee inspired cues will continue into the interior, where the Durango is expected to adopt the  Chrysler brand’s larger 8.4-inch LCD screen as a part of the Uconnect system.
