Priests Should Drive 'Humble' Cars: Pope
Pope Francis made a plea to the Catholic Church’s priests and nuns, asking them to pick a car that’s more “humble” rather than the latest model that’s available.
As part of his mission to make the Catholic Church more austere and focus on the poor, Pope Francis said that it hurts him when he sees “a priest or nun with the latest model car,” acknowledging that vehicles are necessary to do a lot of work, but prefers if the members of the Church used a little more discretion when choosing which one to purchase.
“A car is necessary to do a lot of work, but please, choose a more humble one. If you like the fancy one, just think about how many children are dying of hunger in the world,” he said.
According to the ANSA news agency, the pope uses a Ford Focus to move around the Vatican City, a vast contrast from former Pope Benedict XVI’s custom electric Renault and the X5 he once received from BMW as a gift. Then again, there’s a bit of irony in all of this considering the “Pope Mobile” is still from Mercedes-Benz.
