Mercedes S-Class Coupe Concept Revealed as the New CL-Class

Mercedes-Benz just unveiled the S-Class Coupe concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Set to serve as an upmarket option for S-Class customers, the car features all the same amenities as its four-door sibling. Power comes from the same bi-turbo V8 and makes 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Arguably the most important aspect of Mercedes’ range-topping products, the cabin also remains stylistically similar to the sedan.

There are four bucket seats meant to pamper the car’s passengers along with the same 12.3-inch screens found in the current S-Class. Mercedes’ “Magic Body Control” is also in place here. It uses a camera to scan the road surface ahead. The information is then used to adjust the dampers in split seconds to prepare for changing road conditions.

As the coupe version, the car doesn’t really need to change very much. In fact, Mercedes seems to have made a point to make as few changes to the interior as possible. After all, the automotive press has done little other than to worship the new S-Class like a golden calf. Would you dare tinker with that?

Superficial changes make up the majority of this car’s alterations. Even with its softer lines in keeping with Mercedes’ latest design language, the S-Class sedan is left looking almost boxy beside the new coupe concept. It maintains the LED headlights with its daytime running light eyebrow accents, but the grille and front fascia take on a treatment similar to what Mercedes used on the Concept Style Coupe that previewed the current CLA-Class. In other words, don’t expect the overly organic-looking grille to live through final design washes.

Other design elements include 21-inch wheels and smoother, more elongated body lines. The trunk lid is longer and more stretched looking, and the tail lights wrap around onto the rear quarter panels.
