FAW-Volkswagen has announced a partnership with Protean Electric that will see Protean’s in-wheel electric motors used in an all-new electric vehicle based on the VW Bora (known as the Jetta in North America).
The car will use two separate electric motors, each one mated to one of the rear wheels. Each motor weighs about 75 pounds and can produce up to 100 hp. Regenerative braking is also capable with the Protean motors, that fit inside conventional 18-inch wheels.
FAW-Volkswagen is a joint venture between the FAW Group Corporation, a Chinese state-owned automotive manufacturing company and Volkswagen Group. The cooperation between FAW-VW and Protean began months ago, with all of the testing and vehicle calibration expected be finished within one year. The partnership will result in a demonstration vehicle with the intent for production.
Protean is also assisting FAW-VW with the development of safety and vehicle controls that may be used in other vehicle programs.
