The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has chosen the 2014 Mazda6 as the overall winner of Canadian Car of the Year.

The new Mazda6 beat out its stablemate, the Mazda3, and the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray to take the honors. To qualify for the overall award, the Mazda6 first had to win its original category, best new family car under $30,000.

The 2014 Mazda6 was also a nominee in AutoGuide’s 2014 Car of the Year awards.

To pick the car of the year, about 80 Canadian auto journalists gather ever year for an event known as ‘Test Fest,’ where each car is tested back-to-back against its rivals. Judges are asked to score each car in a number of categories, and the decision comes from points awarded.

The scores are then submitted to independent auditor KPMG, who formulate the final results.
