2016 Mazda2 Spotted in Europe, Dressed for Easter

A redesigned version of the spunky little Mazda2 was spotted frolicking in Europe. The car was dressed in a festive zebra pattern, but not because Easter is nearly here; it’s so we can’t get a good look. Still some information about this 2016 model can be gleaned.

The new Mazda2 subcompact hatchback is expected to look like the Hazumi concept the company revealed at the Geneva Motor Show about a month ago. The grille shape is similar, with a pointed bottom and broad “smile,” plus the headlamps look pretty comparable as well.

Moving to the side, this test mule appears to share the same profile shape as the design study it’s based on. Even the wheels are the spitting image of the rims the Hazumi rolled on.

Expect this car to ride atop a truncated version of the company’s Skyactiv architecture. It should also feature a fair amount of high-strength steel in the mix for maximum rigidity and safety.

As for propulsion, the 2016 Mazda2 will feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at roundabout 115 hp. A six-speed manual and continuously variable transmission are expected to be offered.

Production is slated to commence in the fourth quarter of the year at Mazda’s new factory in Mexico. Olé!
