This week, the most researched cars in AutoGuide.com’s new cars shopping section range from Italian luxury to Japanese affordability.

The 2014 Toyota Corolla was the most popular and for good reason. Mr. T sells an awful lot of its compact, fuel-saving sedans, but the next most popular car this week is something of a dark horse. Maserati’s Ghibli mid-sizer was also very popularly searched this week. Aiming at cars like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Ghibli represents Maserati’s stab at securing higher volume sales.

But closely behind it, the Mazda3 and CX-5 small crossover were also well represented this week among people looking for a new vehicle. Both are built on Mazda’s “SkyActiv” platform and offer the choice of a 2.0- or 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Finally, Mercedes’ CLA 250 rounded off this week’s top five picks. The baby Benz is front-wheel drive based but is also available with all-wheel drive. Of course, there’s also the hotter and more expensive CLA45 AMG with its crazy 355-hp heavily boosted four-banger.
