Hyundai Subcompact Crossover Creeps Closer to Life

Hyundai is drawing closer to selling a subcompact crossover that will sit below the Tucson in its lineup.

Last April, Hyundai Motor American CEO Dave Zuchowski said that the company was considering a small crossover below what it currently offers. At the time, Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor said the project hadn’t been given a green light for production and while the company hasn’t made an official announcement about the yet-unnamed model, Zuchowski revealed new details about it in an interview with Edmunds.

The new crossover will be designed to attract first-time buyers to the brand. “Think of maybe something that looks like a Juke or something that has edgy, dynamic styling,” he told Edmunds.

Responding to an e-mail inquiry, Trainor wouldn’t confirm that the model has been given a nod for production, but said “it’s being seriously looked at.”

The subcompact crossover segment is currently one of the fastest growing in North America and one that brands like Hyundai are having a hard time ignoring. Following surprise success by the Buick Encore, Chevrolet is preparing to launch the mechanically similar Trax in the U.S. this year. Currently the Sonic-based crossover is built in South Korea, but Chevrolet is also planning to produce it in Mexico.

Similarly, Honda is planning to re-launch its HR-V nameplate based on the subcompact Fit hatchback. The HR-V will feature the same “magic seats” as the Fit, but will offer taller ride height and a bolder-looking body.

During this year’s Beijing Motor Show, Hyundai revealed a near-production concept version of the ix25 that it is expected to pit against the Ford EcoSport in the global auto market. The ix25 could serve as a preview of the subcompact crossover Hyundai Motor America is ruminating.
