Fuel economy ratings for the upcoming GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado were released today.

When the trucks reach dealers, they will be the first new products to reach the segment in years and will be able to use superior fuel economy as an enticement over the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier in V6 form. The automaker released fuel economy numbers today for the six-cylinder models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission in both two- and four-wheel drive forms. Consumption estimates applicable to four-cylinder models with automatic and manual transmissions are still unreleased through the company and none of the numbers currently appear on FuelEconomy.gov where those numbers are reported by the U.S. EPA.

But Chevrolet says the Canyon and Colorado siblings will offer 18 MPG in city driving, 26 on the highway or a combined 21 when outfitted with two-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive models see a single MPG penalty in the city and on average while highway driving drops by two to 24 MPG. General Motors will offer the trucks with active grille shutters that serve to reduce drag and improve fuel economy.

The company also plans to offer a 2.8-liter Duramax turbocharged diesel engine for the 2016 model year following the launch of the 2015 model year this fall.
