New Volvo S90 Targets BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class

Volvo is out to prove it can compete in the luxury segment.

The Swedish automaker is confident that its next-generation XC90 is capable of rivaling competitors such as the Audi Q7 and will use the XC90 to influence the new S90 sedan. The model will be built from the ground up to compete with German products including the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

As a whole, the Volvo S lineup will focus on elegance with the S90 to emphasize sophistication. While the S90 will retain the basic shape of the current S80, the more upscale sedan will feature sculpted headlights, a bold upright grille and horizontal “T” LEDs – similar to what the automaker teased for its upcoming XC90. The model is also set to be built on the same SPA platform as the SUV and will likely be powered by the Drive-E family of engines along with an available plug-in hybrid powertrain.
