The sales race among Germany’s luxury automakers is heating up.

Mercedes-Benz topped Audi in sales last month for the first time all year while having its best-ever month in sales in its 88-year history. Last month, Mercedes sold 162,746 units which is also a 14 percent increase compared to last year’s September. Audi had its best ever September in sales, but still fell short of Mercedes with 159,950 units sold.

Audi passed Mercedes in 2011 to become the second premium automaker behind BMW but has seen its lead over Mercedes shrink to 103,494 units after nine months, compared with the 118,110 lead it had a year ago. Regardless, Audi still has a goal of pushing over 1.7 million units sold this year, topping last year’s record of 1.58 million. Mercedes is hoping to best its last year record of 1.46 million units.

BMW hasn’t published its September sales figures yet but through eight months this year, its deliveries were up 9.5 percent to 1.15 million.
