BMW Still Leads Tightening Luxury Sales Race

BMW is still in the top spot when it comes to luxury car sales around the globe, but the competition is closing in.

Through November of 2014, BMW has reported selling 1.63 million vehicles, while it’s closest competitor Audi has reported sales of 1.59 million. That puts Audi just 43,000 sales behind BMW, a gap that sat at 54,000 vehicles at the same time last year.

In the third spot, Mercedes-Benz has closed the gap between itself and BMW by 17 percent compared to last year, moving 1.49 million vehicles so far in 2014. Mercedes once held the luxury sales crown, but gave it up to BMW back in 2005. In 2011, Mercedes was passed by Audi in the sales race, but the brand isn’t down for the count. Twice this year Mercedes has beat Audi in monthly sales, including in November.

BMW is still expected to capture the overall luxury sales crown in 2014, but both of its German rivals are closing the gap.
