Drunk Driving Deaths Declined in 2013

Drunk driving deaths in the U.S. were on the decline in 2013 according to new data by the Department of Transportation.

“We’re making progress in the fight against drunk driving by working with law enforcement and our safety partners and by arming people with useful tools, such as our new SaferRide app,” NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman said. “This holiday season, don’t make the selfish and deadly choice to drink and drive.”

The statistics were released today in conjunction with the announcement of a smartphone app aimed at discouraging drunk driving that kicks off a nationwide holiday crackdown on drunk driving. The app is available on Android devices starting today, but NHTSA didn’t announce compatibility with other devices. NHTSA hopes the program will curb drunk driving by allowing users to call a taxi or phone a friend for a ride home while sharing their location.
