Tesla Roadster owners don’t have to be envious of Model S owners and their range in the near future.

The American electric automaker has revealed the Roadster 3.0 update, which will give the convertible sports car a new battery, retrofit aero kit and new tires to improve its range to over 400 miles. Currently in its prototype phase, the Roadster 3.0 package will gain a new battery pack that delivers roughly 70 kWh in the same package as the original battery while a new aero kit will improve the Roadster’s drag coefficient by 15 percent to about 0.31.

In addition, the Roadster will receive new tires with an improved rolling resistance coefficient (about 20 percent) while making additional improvements to the wheel bearings and residual brake drag.

As a result of all these changes, Tesla is boasting that the Roadster will have over a 400-mile range, a predicted 40- to 50-percent improvement compared to the first iteration of the Roadster. In the company’s testing, it said, “There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles.” Tesla plans on demonstrating that range in the real world with a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of next year.
