Nissan’s Sway Concept, a vehicle it showcased during the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, could serve as a preview for styling that will influence a future version of the Versa Note.

The Japanese brand designed the Sway Concept with European customers in mind, but Nissan global design chief Shiro Nakamura told Automotive News that the Sway is an illustration of the brand’s vision for a sub-compact hatchback design that could reach the U.S.

Starting with the 2014 model year (arriving in 2013), Nissan began separating its sub-compact sedan and hatchback by introducing the Versa Note, a city-sized five-door based on the Note sold in Europe. Previously, Nissan marketed its sub-compact hatchback under the Versa nameplate. In coming generations, Automotive News reports that the company might further separate the two by dropping the “Versa” name from its small hatchback altogether.
