The next-generation BMW 5 Series has begun testing on the Nürburgring.

Expected to make its debut next year, the 2017 BMW 5 Series looks like a smaller 7 Series in terms of styling although many of its lines are still covered with camouflage. Expect plenty of changes under the slightly revised sheet metal including the heavy use of carbon fiber to help shed weight. The current-generation 5 Series has existed since the 2011 model year and received a mid-cycle refresh in 2014.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series will be built on the German automaker’s new modular platform that will debut in the next-generation 7 Series. The new platform benefits from technology developed through the company’s i sub-brand and incorporates lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. Expect the new 5 Series to weigh around 220 lbs less than the current model while the sedan will be powered by a range of engines from four- to eight-cylinder offerings.
