Porsche will offer a four-cylinder engine in its base models starting next year in the U.S.

CEO Matthias Mueller says that the Porsche Boxster and Cayman four-cylinder models will be available in the U.S. starting midway through 2016.

The cars are expected to offer two different four-cylinder choices, either a 2.0-liter unit or a larger 2.5-liter. Both units will be turbocharged, with Mueller saying that the largest version could make up to 395 hp. These smaller engines will also help both cars reduce weight which should improve both emissions and handling.

These small sports cars will act as a litmus test for four-cylinder Porsche models in the U.S. “We will see how it works and how successful it is and how the customers will react on that, and then we will take the next decisions.” Specifically, Porsche is considering offering a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in its Macan small crossover in the U.S.
