Mazda Expands Takata Airbag Recall

Mazda Expands Takata Airbag Recall

Mazda has expanded its Takata airbag recall to now cover 472,056 vehicles.

Mazda is just one of numerous automakers expected to expand its airbag recalls now that Takata has confirmed its faulty airbag inflators potentially affect 34-million vehicles nationwide.

The first Takata airbag recall expansion affects the 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2004-2008 RX-8 models with a potential 444,907 units affected. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal airbag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors. As with the other airbag recalls, the Takata-built inflators could rupture causing metal fragments to shoot at the occupants.

The affected Mazda6 vehicles were manufactured from May 29, 2002 through May 5, 2008 while the Mazdaspeed6 units were built from August 4, 2005 through June 29, 2007. The 2004-2008 Mazda RX-8 sports cars were built between April 10, 2003 and February 18, 2008.

Recently, it was reported that at least 400,000 Takata replacement parts will need to be replaced again for being faulty.
