According to brand CEO Masamichi Kogai, the Mazda Koeru Concept, which debuted in September 2016, represents an entirely new offering from the automaker, rather than being based on either the CX-5 or CX-9 crossovers.
“It’s a totally new car. It’s a lower, sporty SUV. It’s close to a wagon,” said Kogai. “The CX-9 rides higher. So does the CX-3 and CX-5. [The Koeru] aims to generate more driving pleasure.”
Kogai compared the new vehicle in size to the Subaru Outback, though it will be positioned as a sportier alternative to the CX-5, unlike the off-road ready Outback. Design will also follow in the Subaru’s footsteps, with a station wagon-like profile and five doors.
The Subaru Outback stands mostly alone in its segment and it sells well, which means there is an opportunity for Mazda to snatch some of that market. But they will have to pry away some loyal Subaru fans in order to do so.
