Nurburgring is one of the most notoriously challenging race courses in the world on a good day. When it’s hailing and the weather turns nasty, it gets even worse.
Dozens of racecars crashed and were ruined this weekend while massive hail chunks and torrential rain pelted the world famous Ring. Although bad weather was forecast, drivers and race organizers weren’t anticipating a hail storm that seriously hindered visibility and made the course a slippery mess.
It was a big weekend at Nordschleife, too, as the 24 Hours of Nurburgring was being held. The race had to be halted for dangerous conditions and didn’t resume until late. The bad weather started less than an hour into the race, and nearly 25 cars had crashed just a few laps in.
