SUV Category Added to North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards
Automobile buyers in North America will now have another major award to help them make a purchase.
The North American Car and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) awards has added a sport utility vehicle (SUV) category to serve this booming segment. “Customers use SUVs for everything from work to family transportation to off-road recreation,” said Mark Phelan, NACTOY president. “The NACTOY jury recognizes that with the new award.”

The awards are decided upon by a panel of 60 professional automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada, bringing a variety of viewpoints into the mix. Until now, the truck and utility vehicle category were mixed, but now it will allow each to be judged separately.
The round of 2017 awards will be handed out at the Detroit Auto Show on January 9 and the selection process for identifying eligible vehicles begins this month. Following that there are three rounds of voting leading to three finalists in each category being revealed on December 6.
Last year, the Honda Civic and Volvo XC90 took home top honors in the awards.
