BMW is looking to stay ahead of its competitors in the electric vehicle segment.

With Mercedes-Benz announcing its new EQ sub-brand at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, BMW is looking to launch an all-electric MINI model by 2019, as well as an all-electric version of the BMW X3. In a recent interview, BMW CEO Harald Krueger confirmed that MINI EV will arrive by 2019, with the BMW X3 EV following a year later. Naturally, both vehicles will take advantage of the technologies developed under BMW’s i sub-brand, which currently offers the i3 and i8.

Krueger however, believes BMW is staying one step ahead of the competition: “Competitors are now in phase one on their electric strategy, while we’re entering phase two,” he said. “We’re already well on our way to electrifying the core portfolio, using powertrain technology from BMW i.”

He did decline to reveal specifications on the upcoming vehicles, saying that they will be “competitive” in terms of range and price. Sales of BMW plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles are on track to reach about 60,000 units this year, nearly double what BMW did in 2015.
