Toyota is recalling about 5.8 million cars for potentially faulty airbag inflators made by Takata.

The new recall adds to a total of about 100 million vehicles that have been recalled worldwide for faulty airbag inflators that are now linked to at least 16 deaths globally. Toyota’s recall affects about 1.47 million vehicles in Europe, about 820,000 units in China and 1.16 million in Japan. The remainder are in Central and South America, Africa, and the Middle East as well as Singapore.

Affected models in the latest recall include the Corolla, Yaris and Vitz subcompact, Hilux pickup and the Etios line of sedans and hatchbacks. The recall covers driver- and passenger-side airbags installed in cars produced from May 2000 to November 2001 and April 2006 to December 2014. It also includes about 20,000 cars that were fitted with replacement Takata inflators following an initial recall in 2010. The replacement parts are also considered to be at risk of exploding because they do not contain a drying agent.

Transport authorities around the world believe inflators without a drying agent are unsafe and have ordered them to be recalled.
