Subaru Has Managed to Set a Nurburgring Lap Record

Subaru has managed to set a Nurburgring lap time, although it was done with a special build that can’t be considered a production car.

The custom built Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special race car turned in a lap time of 6:57.5 at the Nurburgring, which is quite impressive even though it wasn’t a street-legal production car. That means the lap time gives Subaru the record for world’s fastest four-door sedan if you aren’t looking at just production cars.

The Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special has also set lap records at the Isle of Man TT and the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb, so it’s no stranger to pushing the limits. The car is built by Prodrive and is equipped with a rally-spec 2.0-liter Boxer engine with around 600 horsepower. That’s nearly double the production WRX STI Type RA that has an estimated 310 hp.

For the lap attempt, the car wore nine-inch-wide slick tires all around and took advantage of a WRC gearbox with an automatic clutch, modified with hydraulics for paddle-shift operation. It also features a redesigned aero package compared to last year’s TT car setup, helping deliver improved handling and top speed on the track.

Subaru said a video of the run will be released shortly, so we’ll update this story as soon as it’s available.

I'm sure that all wheel drive and a paddle box helped. Even though I love this car, this is really irrelevant since this isn't a production car, it was spec built for this purpose. It would be helpful if a price tag was mentioned for the total build as well for reference. Anyone know what a stock STI will run time wises on the ring?

If I win the lottery I'm going to mod a Veyron into a minivan, get me some new records, you betcha. I still want that XKE hearse from "Harold and Maude;" was that a George Barris build, I wonder?
