Ford Trademark Application Suggests a New Model Might Be on the Way

AutoGuide.com has uncovered a new patent application from Ford hinting that it might name a new car after a mollusc.

Ford has filed an application to trademark “Nautilus” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to be used on land motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, as well as automobile badges. It’s the first time the American automaker has ever been tied to the word Nautilus, suggesting a new model might be in the works from the brand. Although a nautilus is a type of marine mollusc, many ships are also given the Nautilus name, but the nautical connection is a puzzling choice for Ford.

The application was filed on September 21, 2017, but it’s unclear what vehicle it could be tied to. Since this isn’t a nameplate Ford has ever used in its history, it’s more than likely being trademarked for a future product or trim name. Sometimes, automakers will trademark a nameplate to prevent it from being used by another company, or to protect previous products but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

For now, we will just have to wait and see how Ford plans on using the Nautilus nameplate.
