Nissan Hopes to Entice the Youths With Sporty Leaf Nismo

Nissan is said to be preparing a sporty Leaf Nismo to help entice younger buyers into its mass market EV.

Alfonso Albaisa, design chief for the new, 150-mile Nissan Leaf, recently told Autocar that the automaker is preparing a “racier” version of the EV. He also said developing Nismo parts for the new Leaf wouldn’t be much of a challenge – so it seems a Leaf with a sporty Nismo lip kit, a rear hatch spoiler, larger wheels and more is on the horizon.

Nissan is said to have a Leaf in development with a larger battery pack and a more powerful motor dubbed the E-Plus. A Nismo variant would be likely based on this higher-end model, but could offer even more performance to compete with some of the quicker EVs on the market.

The new leaf, unveiled earlier this week, boasts a more aggressive look than the soft and bulbous-looking first-generation model. Albaisa said this was done on purpose in order to widen the car’s appeal and attract those buyers who weren’t big on the outgoing car’s styling. With its approachable looks and soft ride, the old Leaf wouldn’t wear Nismo parts too well, but imagining this new version in Nismo guise isn’t hard.

The only question now is will the Leaf Nismo make it to North America?
