Watch the Subaru WRX STi NBR Special Lap the 'Ring in Under 7 Minutes
Subaru has sent its purpose-built Subaru WRX STi Type RA NBR Special around the Nurburgring in under 7-minutes.
The WRX STi Type RA NBR Special was built with the intention of showing what the WRX platform and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system are capable of. Built by Prodrive, the track car is based on a stock 2017 WRX STi and features a full roll cage, a 600 horsepower version of Subaru’s 2.0-liter boxer engine, a rally gearbox and slick tires. It set records at the Isle of Man TT and Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year and was equally as successful in its outing to the Nurburgring.

Fitted with a new aero package that included a rear wing with a Formula 1-style drag reduction system, the WRX STi Type RA NBR Special lapped the ‘Ring in just 6:58.9 in the hands of racer Richie Stanaway. It’s certainly an impressive lap time for a Subaru, but we’re surprised it wasn’t a bit faster considering the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, a production car with an emissions compliant engine and road-legal tires, lapped it in 6:52.01. The Porsche 918 was also a touch faster than the track-ready WRX STi, posting a time of 6:57 flat.
Watch Stanaway wheel the WRX STi Type RA NBR Special to a sub-seven minute lap time in the video embedded below.

Thanks for the ride instead of just the narrative. T'was worth every minute.
