The Volvo Ocean Race-a sailing race around the world–is just around the corner and to celebrate, Volvo has introduced the limited edition V90 Cross Country Ocean Race. The Swedish manufacturer wants to do more than just celebrate with the new special edition car, it also wants to help expand our understanding of the sea.

With each of the first 3,000 V90 Cross Country Ocean Races sold, Volvo will donate 100 Euros (~$116) to the Volvo Ocean Race’s Science Program. The roughly $350,000 donation will help the Science Program install sensors onto the boats participating in this year’s Volvo Ocean Race.

The race takes the boats to some of the most remote parts of the ocean where the sensors can measure levels of salinity, dissolved CO2, and algae. The data gathered will help paint a better picture of pollution levels in the ocean and the impact of that pollution on sea life.

“We’re proud to support the Volvo Ocean Race’s Science Program which will help improve our understanding of the health of the oceans – our greatest natural resource,” said Stuart Templar, Director of Sustainability at Volvo Cars. “As a company, we work to minimize our impact on the world around us, so this project’s innovative approach to tackling a major environmental problem was a great fit for us – not least as we head towards an electric future.”

Offered in an exclusive combination of Crystal White exterior on Matte grey with orange details (inside and out), the V90 Cross Country Ocean Race will also do its part to reduce its impact on the oceans. With carpets made of Econyl, a special fabric made of 100% recycled nylon, some of which was gathered from abandoned fishing nets, this V90 is green by design.

“The V90 Cross Country Volvo Ocean Race is a balanced and capable all-road car, at home on normal roads and off the beaten track,” said Dan Olsson, Vice President Special Vehicles & Accessories at Volvo Cars. “On top of that it includes a range of specially developed standard features such as an integrated, detachable torchlight, additional power outlets and smart dirt- and water-resistant materials.”
