New spy photos have surfaced showing the interior of the next-generation BMW 1 Series hatchback.

For this new generation, the 1 Series will switch from a rear-wheel drive platform to the front-wheel drive UKL platform. The FWD 1 Series is already offered in China in sedan form, with this hatchback variant set to hit European roads sometime next year.

The spy photos show a heavily camouflaged cabin with black draping covering almost the entire dash. We don’t need to see much more of the interior to know what it will look like, however. For the most part, things should look nearly identical to the interior of the Chinese 1 Series sedan.

Under the hood of the new 1 Series should be a range of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines. All-wheel drive will be optional, however the entry-level versions are expected to be FWD only. Previous reports indicated this FWD 1 Series won’t be arriving in North America in either sedan or hatchback form. Most American and Canadian BMW buyers won’t miss it – they’ll prefer the X1 anyway.

Look for the all-new BMW 1-Series hatchback to make its debut sometime early next year.
