Get a dash cam and never second guess what happened in an accident.

Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are behind the wheel, accidents happen. The good news is, dash cams have become much more affordable in recent years, allowing you to spend less than $100 to constantly capture footage while you’re driving. Purchasing and installing a dash cam has numerous benefits, and the footage it captures can be used as evidence if you are involved in or witness an accident.

Some dash cams will also automatically begin recording if they detect motion, which means they can capture footage of crime involving your vehicle, whether it’s a break-in or physical damage to the exterior. Video recordings from dash cams can also help prevent insurance fraud, and is great for parents who are handing over the keys to their teenage kids.

A dash cam doesn’t just have to record unexpected events while driving. They’re also great at preserving your road trip memories, especially if you’re taking a scenic route to your destination.

Regardless of the reason why you’re shopping for a dash cam, you’ve come to the right place in helping you find one. If you’ve already taken some time to shop around and do some research, you’ll likely discover that many dash cams in today’s market are very similar. Not surprisingly, most dash cams are manufactured overseas, so many of them have similar features and even use the same components.

In this article, we’ll break down the top 10 best options you can buy for any budget, many of which are affordable, while some are top-of-the-line products are loaded with features such as dual lenses so they can also record what’s happening inside the vehicle. For more information on dash cams, refer to our table of contents.

1. Editor's Pick: Rexing V1 WiFi Car Dash Cam

Our top pick for dash cams comes from Rexing. This dash cam sports a discreet low-profile design, allowing it to stay well hidden while capturing coverage of the road ahead. It comes equipped with a Sony STARVIS image sensor, which is capable of capturing full HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second (fps). Sporting a 170-degree ultra wide angle lens, the Rexing V1 WiFi dash cam also has wide dynamic range (WDR) technology to perform well in all sorts of lighting situations.

Helping it withstand extreme temperatures from -20°F to 176°F is a supercapacitor, which also aids in preventing the risk of overheating. This extends the life span and reliability of the dash cam as well. A parking monitor feature automatically causes the dash cam to turn on and start recording if it detects vibration. This dash cam is also capable of capturing frames for a time lapse video 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Standard video can be recorded in 1 or 3 minute intervals and once the storage limit has been reached on the memory card, new recordings will automatically overwrite the oldest recordings. If the built-in gravity sensor (G-sensor) detects a collision, the dash cam will lock the current video, which means it can’t be overwritten. The Rexing V1 WiFi car dash cam supports microSD memory cards up to 256GB in size.

With WiFi capability, you can view, save, and share dash cam recordings easily from your mobile device.

4. Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual Dash Cam

The Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual dash cam is a popular option among shoppers, but it is a bit more expensive than the rest of the products on our list. That’s because this dash cam features two lenses, one that captures footage of what’s occurring in front of the vehicle, and another for the inside passenger cabin. The sensor used for the front camera is an OV4689 while the inside car camera is equipped with a Sony Exmor IMX323 sensor.

To capture all the events ahead of your vehicle, the front lens has 170 degrees of coverage, while the inside lens provides 140 degrees. If you’re using both cameras at the same time, you can capture 1080p video at 30fps, or if you only need the front camera, you can choose between 1440p video footage at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps.

Helping handle low light situations, the interior camera features a f2.0 aperture lens that is further assisted by 4 infrared LED lights. The front camera has a f1.8 aperture lens and HDR to help balance light and dark areas of video footage.

Other features on this dash cam include 24-hour motion-activated parking mode, which causes the camera to automatically record when it detects motion. There is also a built-in microphone for recording audio, as well as a time lapse function that will automatically take photos at specified intervals.

Like most other dash cams, the Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual offers seamless loop recording that will automatically overwrite the oldest footage unless the G-sensor automatically detects a sudden shake or collision, at which point the camera will lock the footage and protect it from being overwritten. If necessary, you can also add an optional GPS unit to track your driving route.

Vantrue offers a full 18-month warranty with its products.

A built-in G-sensor is pretty much standard on all these products, which allows the dash cam to automatically detect any sudden shakes or collisions, locking the footage to prevent it from being accidentally overwritten.

The wide angle lens on this unit is equipped with WDR to help capture clear footage in low light situations. Other functions on this dash cam include loop recording, motion detection, on/off audio, license plate stamp, time stamp, auto power off, screensaver, and burst photo mode.

6. OldShark Dash Cam

Back to another affordable unit, OldShark’s dash cam doesn’t have any standout features but it’s competitively priced and ticks all the standard boxes you’d expect from a dash cam. Capable of recording 1080p video, this unit has a f1.6 aperture lens to help in low light situations while recording with 170-degree coverage. The built-in G-sensor will detect collisions, locking the current video so that it can’t be accidentally overwritten.

The dash cam is composed of a zinc metal alloy shell for better durability and heat dissipation. Auto on/off ensures the camera turns on and begins recording on its own once the engine ignition is on, and it will automatically turn off once the engine is turned off. Naturally, this feature doesn’t work unless you have the dash cam hardwired to your car’s battery.

OldShark Dash Cam Features:

  • 1080p video recording
  • 170-degree lens with f1.6 aperture
  • G-sensor for collision detection
  • Locks video footage

8. BlackVue DR750X-2CH Plus

BlackVue is an ultra-premium premium South Korean dash cam manufacturer which has been in the business since 2010. The DR750X-2CH Plus model is a dual front and rear camera design that uses excellent FHD Sony STARVIS image sensors in both, giving extended low-light range. Both cameras offer a wide 139-degree angle in full 1920×1080 HD, the front at 60 FPS and the rear facing at 30 FPS.

BlackVue includes a free BlackVue Cloud service, allowing realtime monitoring of your car as long as it has a WiFi connection or the optional LTE module, and if your car is unattended for a long time, the DR750X-2CH Plus front and rear dash cam includes a parking mode that can be hardwired in to power the unit while monitoring your vehicle's battery. While parked, HS time-lapse allows up to 27 hours of recording on a single 16 GB MicroSD card. In normal mode, this dual dash cam records a one-minute cycle, with all the impact and GPS sensors you'd expect. However, you can protect up to 50 clips from being overwritten.

One of the best features of the BlackVue DR750X-2CH Plus is a no-touch sensor that you can configure either to turn the unit on and off; or trigger manual recording, just by waving your hand in front of it. As this is a premium WiFi dashcam, BlackView offers an optional tamper-proof case, along with many more accessories including a cellular LTE module an extended battery pack.

9. PRUVEEO Dual FHD Dash Cam

Another dual lens dash cam offering comes from PRUVEEO. Although it is more affordable than Vantrue’s unit, there are some compromises. The front and cabin lens both capture 1080p video with a 150-degree lens, rather than Vantrue's 170-degree and 140-degree lenses. It does, however, include a built-in GPS module, although more recent models do include this feature.

With this dash cam hardwired to your car’s battery, it can provide parking monitoring by automatically turning on the camera so it starts recording if it detects any external force. It features a low profile design that allows for both cameras to be rotated 180-degrees forward and backward, as well as 50-degrees left and right. Any recorded video during parking monitoring will be locked so it can’t be overwritten thanks to the camera’s built-in G-sensor.

With its f1.8 aperture lens up front featuring WDR technology, this dash cam will record video footage in low light situations. It uses a HDR Sony sensor for advanced imaging technology and improved processing efficiency.

PRUVEEO Dual FHD Dash Cam Features:

  • Dual lens
  • 1080p video recording for front camera (150 degrees, f1.8 aperture with WDR)
  • 1080p video recording for inside car camera (150 degrees)
